AURA Enters Preliminary Design Review

2026-09-04

This week, our electric propulsion system entered Preliminary Design Review.

To begin the process, we welcomed Michael Fehringer and Eduard Bosch Borràs to our facilities in Reading, while Dan Goebel participated remotely.

Michael Fehringer is our advisor and a former ESA propulsion and systems engineer who worked on GOCE, one of only two missions to have sustained operations below 300 km. GOCE operated for more than four and a half years, using electric propulsion to continuously counteract atmospheric drag.

Dan Goebel also advises NewOrbit. He is a NASA JPL Fellow and Senior Research Scientist who helped pioneer modern electric propulsion, with 59 patents and more than 280 scientific publications in the field.

Eduard Bosch Borràs is an Electric Propulsion Engineer at ESA and the Technical Officer for our current GSTP contract.

Together with our engineers, the reviewers examined the overall design and challenged key assumptions. The process continues next week with the subsystem reviews.

We are excited to share more as the review progresses!
